As may be apparent, the chapters from here on, in the "green syllabus" began life as a separate set of lectures by James Herod. When Georgia Tech was on the quarter system, there were several ten-week courses related partial differential equations. One of them reviewed matrix theory and then discussed integral equations as a prelude to the method of Green functions. When we created this joint on-line text, basic linear theory was already included in chapters I-II. Hence this section should be preceded by those. The instructor may optionally include any of the intervening sections on Fourier series and the method of separation of variables as well before beginning this section.
